New Britain DUI / DWI

"DUI" stands for DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE and occurs when someone is operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substance, to the extent that his or her mental faculties are impaired. It is sometime referred to as “DWI” which stands for driving while intoxicated.

A First Offense DUI can include a Fine of $500 to $1000, 48 of hours minimum mandatory jail time with a maximum exposure of up to 6 months. The Court can order you to perform 100 hours of community service and your license will be suspended for one year.

A Second Offense DUI can include a fine of $1000 to $4000, 120 days of minimum mandatory jail time with a maximum exposure of up to 2 years. Your license will be suspended for 3 years and the Court will order 100 hours of community service.

A Third Offense DUI can include a fine of $2000 to $8000, minimum mandatory jail time of 1 year with a maximum exposure of up to 3 years and with an order of 100 hours community service and a permanent license revocation.

A diversionary program called the Alcohol Education Program (A.E.P.) may be available to you if you have no prior DUI / DWI convictions and have not used the A.E.P. in the last 10 years. Successfully completing the program will result in the dismissal of the DUI / DWI charge.

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles will also seek to suspend your license regardless of whether or not you are found guilty of DUI / DWI!
